Know the Signs of Mental Illness

Each condition has its own symptoms, which is why it’s important that you speak to a doctor, therapist, or other mental health professional. They’ll be able to recognize any symptoms you may be experiencing and give you a proper diagnosis.

Signs of a mental health condition may include:

  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Excessive worrying or fear
  • Excessive sadness
  • Extreme changes in mood
  • Lack of energy or feeling tired
  • Changes in sleeping habits
  • Changes in eating habits, such as lack of appetite
  • Substance abuse
  • Feeling confused
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Avoiding friends and social activities
  • Prolonged and/or intense feelings of anger
  • Difficulty perceiving reality

For younger children, signs of mental illness may be more difficult to spot. In general, a child may have a mental health condition if you notice changes in school performance, frequent nightmares, excessive worry, hyperactive behavior, aggression, or frequent temper tantrums.
